There is a long-held history in our family from a time, many years before I was born, when certain of us possessed the power of candle-reading divination, all of which faded at one and the same time Major Magic made its inexplicable exit from the world. Ever since, those of us, like I, have been relegated by friends and society to divining the future from the way steaming entrails of sacrificed animals are spilled upon slabs of cold stone, or the future from the patterns of migrating birds, and more recently, parlor tricks like mindreading, picking correct cards from a deck, trying to decipher meaning from within crystal balls, the deal of the Tarot, a throw of dice, the lines on the palm of a hand; and, finally, twice a year, to the lighting of a ritual candle in memoriam of those long-gone, long-lost, mostly forgotten candle-readers.

            Except . . . at the last biyearly lighting of a ritual candle, I truly experienced a vision, and since then, with each candle-lighting subsequent visions. All of which leads me to believe that I have been chosen, by whomever or whatever powers may be, to chronicle not only the reasons behind the initial fading of Major Magic but also its recent return.

            So, join me, if you will, as I light yet another candle, one made specifically for this purpose by the candle-artisan, Jfay, and begin recording for posterity, and relating to you, personally, what is even now occurring, at this very moment, in an area around a small town called Flicker in central Washington State, where there is, even as I write, fierce competition in progress between young and old, male and female, candle-readers, vampires, werewolves, shape-shifters, demons, dragons, shadow-people, chimera, tree-spirits, and all manner of other long forgotten beasts and races, some once known, some never known, but all vying for the ultimate power in Major Magic—sitting on the Grand Wizard’s throne.

            I light my candle within this dim-lit room. I relax and let myself merge with the flame, dance within its flickering glow. I gaze into its fiery center to read what is my family’s heritage and my own present and future to see.
